If you are a server, how much do you make per hour (NOT including tips)? Please also tell me what state you work in?

I'm trying to prove a point to a family member about tipping waitstaff. Thanks :)

I was paid a little over $3/hr, here in Florida. I have had friends getting paid $10/hr at some places on top of tips. Note that at the end of the night you have to declare tips.. some restaurants require you to declare more than the state requires. It depends on the type of restaurant. My friend declares 5% a night because she works in such an upscale restaurant that 5% is $60. I claimed the state amount at a sports bar, which I believe was 15%. Where I worked I had to pay for any meals that were walked out on. Niiice.

My friend used to be a chef at a major resort in Northern Michigan. He says that the wait staff made around $5.25/hr. The tips were high at this ski/golf resort. He was also a cook at his family run bar/grill There the wait staff currently makes $4.00/hr. The tips are not as high there. Hope this helps!!

Two-something an hour. MEANWHILE, if your family member is too stupid to tip his or her waiter or waitress, this probably won't help.
Or as the famous admonition says: Never try to teach a pig to sing -- it wastes your time and annoys the pig.

I know in Illinois I have gotten anywhere from $3.25 to $5.75. Almost all restaurants pay their servers under minimum wage (legaly) because they government knows that not all tips are declaired.

I have heard that some REALLY UPSCALE places will do minimum and up, but I never worked at one of them.
