I ask because I have to pick up $160 worth of food for Thanksgiving and a $32 tip seems silly for takeout

I am a server, and I tip at least 20% for both services, either take out or sit down. Also, it makes a servers or take out persons day to get a 20% tip. Trust me, the $30 is not going to make you or break you! However, I think they will be find with a $20.00 tip as well! Remember it is a Holiday! These people could be at home with their familes too!! You would be surprised how many people do not tip on take out, and that sucks!

I've never tipped on takeout. You are tipping for the service. You don't get a person attending to your needs when you pickup food. Its one of the perks of taking out.

NOTHING -- because if you want a "to go" order, with the possible exception of pizza, you should go to the market, buy the food, take it home and cook it. Restaurants are for going out to eat . . . and in a restaurant, you tip the waitress. It really is that simple.

usually for takeout 10%, for an order that big the person might have to make a few trips or they may be splitting it between a couple people who bring the food out to your car. BUT I would think $5 is good(per person)

0-10% depending on the level of service given

I never tip for takeout

That depends on if you want to tip, how much you can afford, and how often you go there!!!
No tip is too small..
It is always optional...I tip depending on the service.

Generally, a few bucks is very nice, keeping in mind, the larger or more complicated your order is in the 10% or more neighborhood. No one in this business really expects 20% unless it's raining or snowing and you're expecting carside service.

There is no set amount for take out because you are not being served. And no one has to clean up after you leave so a couple bucks if you feel you need to tip is fine.

A couple of dollars is acceptable, more if you ask the deliverer for something extra or add on to the order last minute. Any gesture is appreciated....and most of the time an unexpected bonus.
