Would you enjoy an unusual restaurant with full bar, and lists of wines, beers and spirits from all over the world, that highlighted a menu full of exotic game and other meats (legally harvested elephant, lion, antelope, guinea pig, crocodile and alligator, etc., as well as bison and elk and wild boar) with equally unusual veggies and fruits, that would emphasize its ecentricity by featuring roast or grilled caribou on Christmas, rabbit dishes on Easter, barbecued hearts on Valentine's, horse roasts or steaks on Kentucky Derby day, and some kind of mystery Witches Stew on Halloween? There would also be a special menu item commemorating the animal of the current Chinese year (yes, including year of the rat).

Is this considered poor customer service?

One time when I was at Shari's Restaurant I've asked the server after she was done helping another patron if she could give me a refill and she totally copped an attitude towards me by telling me that she'll be right there and that she was really busy at the moment.

Then she later apologized for her attitude and she told me that she doesn't like it when people are calling her when she's on her way to help another customer.

Another issue I have at Shari's Restaurant is that they always tend to give you your bill as soon as your meal arrives and I feel like they're rushing me to get out and I don't consider that good customer service.

I did tip her and I've never reported her to the manager although I wish I did.

Let's say I dined at a fine restaurant and my bill was $30. I tip 15%, so I leave $4.50 for my server when I leave. Next, I dine at Denny's and my bill was $8. I tip 15%, so I leave $1.20 on the table. In BOTH restaurants, the two servers who served me worked equally hard and were very polite.

My question now: is tipping based on the % of the bill a really good idea? Because of the above reason ($4.50 tip vs $1.20 for EQUALLY good service), I only tip a FIXED amount of $2 to the server plus an extra dollar for each extra person served.

I'm trying to tip the server's service; not the bill amount. If you overtip them, they would make more than professions that require a college degree (I have a classmate who makes $50,000+ annualy on TIPS alone). At the same time, if you undertip them, that wouldn't be good either. So, how do we know how much to tip?

Hopefully this does not sound like a rant. I'm actually curious...

I've served tables in St. Louis and LA and both places had people who seemed to think that a 10% tip is okay (because they'll look you in the eye and smile and say thanks as they leave) or that $5 is the universal good tip for any bill under $100, or that $10 is good for any bill over $100.

So to the people who tip this way when service is good, were you raised and taught to tip this way, or was it a decision you came to on your own?

Keep in mind that I'm wondering about people who tip this way for good service. An answer that says "For bad service, I tip that way" doesn't help me. I'm talking about for good service.
