In English "entrees" can be either first course appetizers or the principal plates, depending on where you are in the English speaking world. In French an entree is an appetizer, EXCEPT, for some strange reason, in Acadian French where again the word is used for principal plates (appetizers being "Présentées").
This can sure drive one nuts if one takes an Autumn vacation from Boston through New England to Montreal then across to Gaspé and New Brunswick.

The entree is like the "featured presentation" The appetizer or sometimes amuze bouche (sp?) is before the meal. To get your palette going. Sometimes a salad or a bread course. Then the main course- the entree followed by desserts and/or coffee.

An entree is the main course. The appetizer comes first, then the soup, then the salad, the entree, dessert, and then coffee. In other countries, in order may be changed around, The French eat their salad at the end of their meal. However you eat it, enjoy!

In the United States and English Canada, this smaller course is typically called the first course, appetizer, or starter, with entrée used as a synonym for the main course.
In its use outside of North America, an entrée is more substantial than hors d'Åuvres and better thought of as a half-sized version of a main course, and restaurant menus will sometimes offer the same dish in different-sized servings as both entrée and main course.
The word entrée is French. It generally means "entry", and "a smaller, first course" when used in relation to food.
