Take-out from a sit-down restaurant may be purchased to go or may consist of leftovers from a meal eaten at table; the container used for leftovers is called a doggie bag (or doggy bag). In some countries doggie bags are uncommon, and leftovers usually be thrown away, with the exception of most pizza restaurants, who will usually put the left over pizza in a box at your request.

I grew up in the 60s and leftovers were never offered for you to take home. It wasn't easy to wrap up spaghetti when the styrofoam take-out box hadn't been invented yet. ONLY if there were bones on the plate would they ask you if you wanted a doggie bag, and the bones were simply put in a little paper bag.

The term "doggie bag" was first used by a dog who had an ugly wife.

most likely one of these two things[use the one you like best]
1.)dogs' owners should have a daggie bag if they take them for a walk[get it? the dogs' go to the b-room on someones lawn"
2.) you take a daog for a walk and you can put a few treats in a doggie 'treat' bag
hope it helps

Restaurants used to offer a bag for your leftovers saying it could be for your pet, saving you the embarrasment of saying it was probably going to be your midnight snack or tomorrows breakfast.

Just a guess...but I say that people would want to take their bones, etc from the restaurant home to their dog. Then it turned into THEY wanted to take it home for leftovers.

once you were done dining, instead of wasting food and throwing it away, you'd bag it up and give it to the dog

or failing that, a local homeless man who could use a meal
