I'm moving to England for a new job in a couple months and in order to help predict my budget etc. I'd like to know a ballpark of what I'll be actually taking home as far as my paycheck. In the States, I do not get much more than half of my annual salary. So, my salary is 25K pounds (sorry, can't locate the symbol for pounds), can anyone give me an idea how much will go to tax? Thank you!

A few facts before you answer:

Average annual cost to the NHS on smoking related diseases in the UK is £1.7 billion

Average annual government income from tax on tobacco in the UK is £10.5 billion.

The high tax apparently has 2 purposes, to encourage lower usage and to keep taxes lower for those who can't afford it.....Isn't this self defeating, if the government achieve objective 1, objective 2 falls on it's face!

Excluding immegrants, those that do not work and the self employed, the rest of us work hard for our money.(No slight on self employed, but you will see where I am coming from)

We earn money and pay tax on it.
We put it into savings, and pay tax on it.
We withdraw it and spend it, we pay tax on it.
We use it ,throw away the rubbish, and pay tax on that as well.

Has anyone ever worked out how much our money is actually taxed and what we ever get back for it?

We have a proprty which we would like to give to our son who hasn't any other assets.
If he should sell the property within seven years of our giving it to him, would any of us be liable for tax. Is there a time limit? I know we would pay gift tax if either myself or my husband were to pass away within the seven years. But once the gift is made, is he free to do with it whatever he wishes?

Can they take my car, which is on finance, for my partners debt?
The Bailiffs came round today to collect on my partners Council Tax debt. They listed my car in the possession order. They are coming back on Friday and if we dont have the money will take the goods.

We are not married, I am not liable for Council Tax. The car is solely in my name and he does not drive.

I'm involved with a loss of earnings claim, and the other side's accountants want to deduct tax and NIC from the compensation award, quoting IM361 and the Gourley case in support.
I agree this applies to awards by the Courts, but not to insurance company payouts. I have never accepted such deductions in the past. I think BIM 40105 and BIM 40751 are relevant, and the loss of earnings should be paid gross and the recipient should account for tax and NIC.

What say you?
