Because the worthwhile people (see above) who really need the benefits to get back on their feet are vastly outnumbered by the freeloading good for nothing shite who either:
a) Come here as immigrants for no other reason than econonic benefit
b) Already live here but are complete chav scum who would rather drink cheap cider, watch sky and shag each others sisters - thats when theyre not shoplifting, breaking into your house or waiting to mug you.
c) Are just too plain lazy to work and would rather take the p!ss out of the system and everyone else, knowing the chances of getting caught are minimal AND ARE PROUD OF IT!!
THATS WHY.
Do I sound bitter?

I claim income support as i was told by my partner he wanted a child with me then when i had the baby he told me to stay at home. I quit my job of 6 years then after my maternity leave allowance time was up the dad went and fucked off with some little slag and booted me out of the house with the baby and i was homeless and jobless. Im NOT a druggie and im NOT a bad person. I have worked and paid taxes myself so you above, is why people like me get defensive.

Work in jobcentre & wat really get my blood boiling is how they dress in top notch gear, have new mobile phones, drive good cars & have still money for beer & cigs every week.
While I work 37 hrs a week, struggle to pay mortgage bills etc, drive a little car & go out maybe once a month if i'm lucky.
Just a message to cheeks it was also your choice to have the baby & wats stopping you now returning to work, I had to return after maternity leave not just for financial reasons but for my sanity. Get some self respect back & show the pig your so much better without him!!!

To be honest, I think it's a psychological reaction to someone other than yourself taking advantage of your property. Most British are charged 22% on income tax so they never see that the full profit of their hard work. The layman feels that he is entitled to this money, but when the government removes it without his 'permission', he feels like he is being 'legally robbed'. This is true even if the money is supposed to go towards causes like building homes for the homeless or providing accomodation for those who have come here to escape (certain) death in their own country.
In today's environment, we are naturally defensive against such 'foreigners' or those we perceive not to be working but still living a full and happy life; whereas we are persecuted to some extent when we try to take a day or two off work by pulling a sickie. This is compunded by the thought that the money the government takes from our accounts goes to these people who do not or are unable to provide for themselves, making most of the people I know, and I'm sure you know, a little bit annoyed.
In addition, the media is constantly spouting stories of, for example, inciters of hatred obtaining multiple housing off benefits. At the same time, a first home is out of the picture for many indigenous folk who've worked for 40 years. Such horrific tales of skewed upper-level decision-making and a lapse of attention by authorities frighten us, as we realise that our own money (so what that it never reached our bank accounts) is not at all safe in the hands of the big shots. What guarantee do we have that the money we pay as tax is going into shelter schemes, public community events, and national health services? In most instances, what proof is there for us to verify this? (There's MRSA, I suppose.) Many of the public schemes I know have come out of the proprietor's own pocket and not through public spending.
I guess one of the logical ways of thinking yourself out of this state of anger is that you won't have seen that tax money in your account anyway. I have just graduated and got my first job, and although I would be able to pay off my student loan within the year if I could keep all my income, I'm making barely above the personal allowance by the end of the year. Which, ironically, would make me eligible for benefits of my own!! If some of the tax money had been used to provide part-grants for students -- not full grants (my generation is not so lucky in its politicians) but just so that we get say 15% of the year's tuition fees paid for us -- then I think we'd all be much better off now.
As it is, I won't be claiming for benefits. I believe in my own hard work, as do 80% of the nation's population, and instead of taking the route of a verbal argument, we should look at it as a way of aiming higher until we can live comfortably post-tax, while satisfying our consciences that we're helping the needy too. We don't need to give to charities. We're paying for the poor and defenceless of our own country anyway, whether the government gets it right or not.
Hope that provides some useful insight. :)
