Question asked by Johnny in Dalton Trumbo's movie "Johnny Got His Gun."

Johnny's Dad's answer was "It has something to do with young men killing each other, I believe."

Do you agree? Any wider interpretation of the word?

What novels deserved to be included in Martin Seymour Smith's List of Influential Books?
Martin Seymour Smith wrote a list of the 100 Most Influential Books in history in 1998 and for the most part, I find it to be a very well thought out piece, but I also can't help but wonder it there are other novels of equal influence that were overlooked from his list. So, in your opinion, what novels deserved to be included in the list and which titles should have gotten the heave-ho?

My Personal Picks -
1. Les Miserables by Victor Hugo
2. Silent Spring by Rachel Carson
3. Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank
5. Tale of a Genji by Murasaki Shikibu
6. Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe

When examining the list, it becomes clear that Smith wasn't just choosing any old bestseller, or even books that changed history, but moreover, books that transormed our way of thinking or the way novels are written and are still highly regarded.

i am writing an essay on the movie Grapes of Wrath and the outcome of the great depression but i can't seem to voice my opinion the correct way. I am trying to say that the Great Depression launched America into a new "age" of wealth and technology, but it doesn't sound right to me. Please help me write a sentence that sounds better and more historically correct. This is what i have so far: After the Great Depression ended in 1939, it took America years to return to its economic status. There were still many unemployed families and starving children but in the end, the Great Depression resulted in ......

I just reread 'The Great Escape' and it suddenly hit me that they had made around 250 compasses, all with 'Made in Stalag Luft III' on the bottom. Not only did only 76 get out, but they were only planning for around 220 anyways. So what happened to all the compasses? They didn't just throw them away. I half expected to find some on eBay for ridiculous amounts, but nothing. I know they stored them down Dick, and Dick was never found. So? Anybody got one?

I would like some clarification / explanation on what I'm reading.

The War of Austrian Succession (1740-1748) started when Maria Theresa became the empress of Austria, and Frederick II of Prussia decided to invade & take Silesia from Austria. The Austrian Succession then continued to involve other European powers at the time... So, the alliances formed was
Austria & Britain vs. Prussia & France.

Fastforward a bit... during the Seven Years' War...
Britain & Prussia vs. Austria & Russia & France.

How did the alliances get flip-flopped?
My book mentions something about Maria Theresa working diplomatically through her minister, Count Wenzel von Kaunitz, but it doesn't really explain WHY Britain and France decideded to change sides.

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks!
