I'm not that familiar with American history. But I understand before the Civil War the Republican party was anti-slavery, more pro-immigration, pro-European, less socially conservative; and the Demo party was pro-slavery, states-rights (anti-federal), anti-immigration, and more allied with Protestant fundamentalists (socially conservative) and dominated the South. Sometime after the Civil War there was a switch in basic values between the 2 parties. I read that in the rural South until recently you had people who were still Democrats because their ancestors were and they simply hadn't gotten the new message (Clinton's bio said this & he benefitted from this). So when & why did the parties reverse?

In "Lincoln and His Generals" T. Harry Williams argues that Lee's "most audacious plans were as much the product of the confederacy's inferior military position as his own fine mind," and that "had Lee been a Northern general with Northern resources behind him, he would have improvised less and seamed less bold."

In other words, the only reason Lee was so bold and daring was because he had to be. This author argues that if Lee would have had a better army, if he would have been a Northern commaner, he would have moved slower and taken less risks.

Any thoughts?

feeling in France and England ? Is the following quote supported by evidence?

"If the Soviet Union had not been a communist regime, or if British and French socialists had governed for most of the decade instead of conservatives, British and French foreign policies most likely would have very different. In either of these cases, Britain and France would likely not have appeased Germany, but instead would have pursued deterrent polices akin to those adopted before the First World War."
