First of all I may be a little biased since I was there for 2 1/2 years in the 70's but here is what I feel.

It is a beautiful country, volksmarches every weekend, every villiage with a heritage and brewery, some of the nicest palaces, castles and churches in the world. Of all the major countries in europe only the Germans can cook.

German history has shaped the world both good and bad, we would not be who we are today if not for the effect Germany had on us.

Someday I would like to return there.

Germany is a country that behaved aggressively toward its European neighbors from before its unification in 1871 until its defeat in World War II in 1945. The Prussian state, on which the German Empire was centered, pursued an aggressive and expansionist policy from the time of Frederick William, Elector of Brandenburg, 1640-1688, through the time of unification in 1871, posing a large threat to other German, Baltic and Slavic states. The Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 severely weakened France and sped the unification of Germany under Kaiser Wilhelm I of Prussia. Wilhelm's grandson, Wilhelm II, presided over Germany during World War I. After the loss of World War I and Wilhelm II's abdication, and Germany's severe economic crisis of the 1920s, Adolf Hitler's Nazi regime brought on the most terrible war in history, World War II, which it lost, disastrously, in 1945. Since that time, the German state appears to have transformed quite thoroughly into a voice of moderation, or even pacifism, in EEC and NATO conferences. American and British fears of a strong and aggressive Germany appear to have largely vanished, but I would imagine some distrust remains in France and the Benelux nations, which have frequently suffered at the hands of Germany in the past century and a half.

My ancestry, beer and sausage. I've seen beautiful photos of the country and want to visit sometime in my life. My family history traces back to the late 1600's there also.
