What circumstances prevented Finland from becoming a 16th republic of the USSR? As you may recall, the only four Northern European countries that Russia has ever invaded in the 40s were Finland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia; however, it's only the tiny nations of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia that were made Soviet republics and incorporated into the USSR, but Finland - for one reason or another - had avoided that fate. Why? What circumstances were so favourable to Finland that helped her to retain its independence and not to become a 16th republic od the Soviet Union?

My guess is,the American War of Independence happened because of the length of time it took communications from the British Monarchy to reach the colony. The settlers in the new world held down the fort only to be told after lose of family members and friends, that the fort land could be released back to the natives and that we should move on to new lands and set up forts there and hold them until the next ships and monarchy orders arrived. The monarchy were hampered due to messengers neglect and fear of reprisal."Across the Atlantic all is well your majesty."

Of course we can look back and justify it by denouncing slavery and recognizing the United States role in world affairs would be much different (esp. our involvement in the European wars, WWI & WWII.) But at that time, why were our forefathers praised for shaking off the oppressive government of England and yet the south was merely trying to do the same thing (in their eyes) and it was considered treason. Lincoln wasn't a warmongerer, and he would not have challenged slavery if the south didn't secede. He, and many others, knew that eventually slavery would die out as it was doomed for failure economically. So why didn't they let the south secede, knowing that they would probably be back on their hands and knees to rejoin the union when their economy collapsed? I respect Lincoln a lot but was it really necessary to drag America through the 4 bloodiest years of its history? Would love anyone's thoughts, feel free to e-mail me as well nickhoffman@mchsi.com to discuss.
