Given the climate of opinion on the US West Coast, Japanese evacuation was inevitable. Japan, of course, had no real possibility of doing damage to California, but that did not seem so reasonable to a California, now panicked by Pearl Harbor, that had backed the anti-Asian immigration legislation of the 20s, and now, worse, had prosperous Japanese farmers and impoverished refugees from the dustbowl.

In defense, the Japanese camps were nothing like those the Germans established: There were decent, though cramped, living conditions, good food and opportunities for education.

In any event, almost all Japanese were allowed to return -- though their property might not still be there -- by 1943. Many of their sons had been released earlier to join the US military. I believe a Japanese-American regiment was the most highly decorated during the Italian campaign.

What evacuations? Where? Do you mean the forced removal of approximately 120,000 Japanese and Japanese Americans from the West Coast? The internment as "dangerous" of nearly 11,000 persons of German ancestry? Or the evacuations of Jews and Poles in Eastern Europe?
