I know back in the 1920s when the television just came out most of the television stations were in New York City, but why were most set up there?

The big issue then was broadcasting range. While the networks were getting a grip on the quality of the images they could send, they were still struggling with the distance they could send them.

New York at the time had the largest audience that could be broadcast to in North America, thus the greater potential to reach more viewers

London also had a few. i guess it was to get a large audience,since there were no networks to carry the signal to other places.
