The French Revolution is one of the most important events in modern history. It was more radical than either the English or American Revolutions, and had a far greater impact on 19th century Europe. The unthinkable fall of the Bourbons resonated throughout Europe, sparking a series of revolutions which rallied behind liberalism and nationalism. The major socialist revolutions of the twentieth century in Russia, China and Cuba were inspired the French example.

The news of the fall of the Bastille greeted Louis XVI late in the night of July 14, 1789, after that monarch had retired from a day at the hunt. Once the duke who had carried the news from Paris finished his statement, the king laconically commented: "Then it's a revolt?" "No, sire," replied the duke, "it's a revolution."

the first answer was right in it being the assault on the Bastille. However, you may be thinking of "the reign of terror". That came further in the French revolution...not near the beginning.

The very first incidence was the storming of the Bastille castle.1789
I am not completely sure what you are asking about...
Are you by any chance asking about the 'Reign of Terror'? That was a little after in 1793.

I always liked the opening lines of "a Tale of Two Cities" by Charles Dickens. " It was the best of times, it was the worst of times>" That set against the Guillotine set the scene for me of the French Revolution.
