Well, it actually was a lot more than just the assassination of Francis Ferdinand. It was all a powder keg and the assassination was the spark that blew the whole thing off. It was all a combination of things that slowly built up tension among countries: Militarism, Nationalism, Allegiances, Imperialism and Anarchy, were the main things that made up the powder keg. It only took the Archduke to be killed for the cup to overflow. The 'peaceful' end of the war was the Treaty of Versailles, which blamed the whole cause of the war on Germany. But of course, this only appeased things for a while because as a result of this World War 2 came along. And that, my friend, is yet another story.
