There's a story in my family that one of my immigrating ancestors came to America by smuggling himself in a pickle barrel. I saw that someone else on this site had the same story. I'm wondering... was that a common thing? If not, WindWalker10 - we may be related!

So was it common? Just trying to figure out some family history.

just trying to find out really what the streets would have looked like in Venice at the time of the Black Plague (around 1630, I believe). Were they rat-infested, with horse dung and straw all over the place? Or were there sewers, but were they open sewers, or did they just throw everything into the canals?

Thanks for the help

P.S. only answers that actually refer to my questions. Links to the history of Venice with no reference to my question are not welcome and actually quite rude.

In the war of 1812 President Madison of the USA started a war with Britain, his aim to conquer Canada. Basically the British drove the Americans out of Canada, went on to take over Washington and burn the White House, and also sacked New York and Boston (or did they). Esentially the USA got stuffed! Americans seem to portray themselves as Victors, probably because of the battle of New Orleans, when an idiotic British commander tried to attack the city through a swamp, and his troops got cut down! However, this happened months AFTER the war finished!

Why did the Napoleonic Wars bring about a strong German reaction against the legacy of the French Revolution? What was the nature of this reaction (nationalism, Prussian reforms, wars against France)?

Last week I was the victim of an unprovoked attack. I didn't know the person who attacked me, I never said anything 2 him before the attack. He was twice my size and I never tried 2 hit him back during the attack, I only tried 2 protect myself by covering my face. Although the injurys I sustained during the attack weren't very serious (just brusies and cuts to my mouth and lips) they did make it painfull to eat or drink hot stuff for the following 4 or 5 days.

I reported the attack to the police. Do you think this was the right thing to do? And what do you think the chances are that the attacker will be punished? Although the attacker was a stranger to me, I could now easily identify him, and in fact I have now found out his name. Do you also think that I did the right thing by not fighting back. Although at the time of the attack I didn't know why I was being attacked, now I understand that the reason I was attacked (in the attackers opinion) was because "I looked at his daughter".
