I think it will be treated as one of the seven blunders of the world. And it may make number one, it is not over yet .The whole region may go up in smoke. When you look at all the different fractions having disputes in that area of the globe. So we all should be holding our breath for the out come of every conflict. Our great leaders are taking this one on the chin.

In all honesty, even though I believe the US will eventually be somewhat 'successful' in this war, in the great scheme of things it is not going to be remembered as anything particularly important. Most likely, the first Gulf War will be treated the same way as the Spanish American War (a relatively painless little war that forced the US into a wider foreign policy position) and the second Iraq War will be treated the same way as the pseudo-colonial wars that followed it, like the Philippine Insurrection and the military interventions in Haiti, Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic.

It depends on who writes the history. The one thing to remember is simply this, The U.S. and allies over threw a horrible dictator that murdered his own people and threatened the region with chemical and biological weapons. They then tried to establish a relatively free democratic system to help the Iraqi people advance into a decent and peaceful society. The biggest opposition to this process was people in the U.S. and in Britain, and fanatical Muslim extremists...there is very little opposition from the Iraqi people themselves.

Tho a popular trend is making references to Viet Nam, historians may find more similarities to WWII Imperial Japan. For example:
1. Torture practices
2. Economic crisis - oil
3. Pre-emptive attacks - Pearl Harbor vs "weapons of mass destruction."
4. Fanatic resistance - suicidal attacks
It remains to be seen what political changes may occur such as examination of Presidential vs. Congressional Powers (i.e. only Congress can declare war).

The biggest blunder the US has made and the beginning of the war against Islamic radicals. It might be called "Bush's War" since it was basically started by one man.

With astonishment. Something so important was fought so hard by so many, not to rebuild but to keep the rebuilding from happening.

With total disbelief that two supposedly mature democracies could become involved in such a way.
