Why did the Napoleonic Wars bring about a strong German reaction against the legacy of the French Revolution? What was the nature of this reaction (nationalism, Prussian reforms, wars against France)?

The Germans resented having "reforms" enforced on them by "outsiders" Historically many peoples have preferred mis-rule by their own kind to good rule imposed by an Imperial power. I wonder if that pattern of history has any relevance in today's world ........
