"Jack" is a common English nickname for someone called "John".

There is no historical thread to this, other than the fact that both names are (and sometimes still are) used when the real name of the person being addressed is not known (eg. John Doe for an unknown dead male).

his family called him that already as a kid
nick names do not always make sense .
I know a skinny kid ,nick named Fatso
because he was fat as a kid ,and the name stuck with the family,apart from that Johns are often called Jack
