There were three types of SS :
- the Waffen-SS (or SS armies) were soldiers. As SS, they had a political education, to convince them they were part of the superior race, wo were the "Untermenschen" (subhuman person) ... They also had a very hard training (all the people who fought in WWII said that the Waffen-SS were the best soldiers). They took part of Operation Barbarossa, fighting with the "Wehrmacht" (regular army), and were systemically sent where the battle is the hardest.
- the SS-Einsatzgruppe. They followed the German forces in Russia, to hunt and kill anyone who was Jewish, communist, member of the party (all the subhuman for Hitler) ... or to fight the Russian resistance (by killing and burning whole villages).
- the SS Totenkopfverbände (or SS with dead head, or Tête-de-mort). Those ones were only recruted to keep the concentration and extermination camps. Lot of them were criminals, rappists... they were hated both by the SS of the Waffen-SS and by the soldier of the Wehrmacht.
So, the Waffen-SS fought during Barbarossa, the third type of SS followed the German troops, but never fought the Red Army (unless at the very end), and the second type never fought at all.

Yes, the Einsatzgruppen were tasked with rounding up & exterminating the "undesirable" elements while the Waffen-SS fought alongside the Wehrmacht.
The Waffen-SS were divided into divisions such as the Adolf Hitler, Gross-Deutschland & Hermann Goering divisions & were recognised by their black uniforms & the skull (totenkopf) on their hats

The SS were apart of the attacking force, as well as a force that followed (as mentioned above). The "Special Groups" that followed summarily executed partisans, civilians and Russian POWs.... The Waffen SS were incorporated into the attacking formations.
