I know tan = y/x and cot = x/y. But I have some trouble on figuring whether x or y is negative when the number in the parentheses is negative. For example, take: tan -(5/4) or cot -(3/7) . How can i figure out whether x or y is negative?

when it says solve
like 4^x+1=8^2x+3


4 and 8 are not the same so does that mean i have to multiplay by two in order to get 8. so that means i have to multiply the exponet by 2 too. right?

I'm told to solve this equation 9x-4= -9x^2

I'm not too sure how to do it, I tried changing it to standard form but I was lost there since there is no common factor.
