I have no idea how to do this./

i keep getting different answers and different ideas how to do this...none of the answers work out to be tangent and the problem is really getting annoying...please help!

one is
solve the following equation to find x in terms of a and b, assuming that a can not equal b.
i know the answer to this is x = -a-b but how do you get to that.
the other is
x in terms of y and t, assuming that y+3t can not equal 0.
i have attempted this one and worked it out to be x= 3t - y. but am still not sure how to solve them.
if you could explain very simply and clearly to me how you solve these that would be great as i am having problems understanding what to do.
thank you for any help you can give.

2)what is the least value for f(x) and the value of x for which this least value occurs

3)find an expression for f(x-3) in the form ax^2 +bx+c, where a,b and c are integers
