It was about a soldier is World War One who was hit by a shell and lost big chunks of his head and brains. The doctors assumed he was in a vegetative state, but decided to keep him alive because he might be of medical interest. The reality was that he had all his faculties, but could not communicate with the nurses and doctors because he could not speak, hear or see. His dreams became more and more vivid and he struggled to differentiate between them and reality. (A rat crawled onto his chest in the hospital, which he could feel, but he did not know if he was having a nightmare). A nurse eventually discovered she could communicate with him by tapping in morse code on his forehead.
