yes indeed
Despite being heavily touted as "inspired by a true story," both Tobe Hooper's original 1974 film and the 2003 Marcus Nispel remake are only lightly based on the real-life murderer Ed Gein, who is suspected to have taken several victims between 1954 and 1957. Perhaps the most recognizable similarity is the film's house, whose gruesome content was similar to that found in Ed Gein's home (above right) in 1957.

The story is based off the Serial Killer Ed Gein.

Ed Gein was convicted of murdering 2 people. With their bodies, he hung them like you hang butchered cattle. It was horrific.

That is where the Texas Chainsaw Massacre comes from because of the brutality the bodies were hung.

I recently saw the movie again. The 2003 remake that is and I wondered the same thing. The disc with the movie said it's based on a true story about a serial killer who killed 33 people in total and that they're not sure any victim ever escaped. They didn't say anything about the killer's name.

Both film versions were based on events that took place in Texas in the late 1960's, the films are fiction but based on certain things that did happen. The same is true for the 1979 George C Scott film THE CHANGELING, certain events that took place in Colorado, also in the 1960's, were changed and set in Washington State in the late 1970's. Many films take real life events and fictionalize them for dramatic effect.

It's not a true story. Here is the truth: parts of it are based off a man named Ed Gein (much as Hannibal Lecter and Jason are). He lived on a farm and murdered some people, using their skin to make clothes and lampshades.

I read from a Movie magazine that it is a fake story...they said that the killer had never used a chainsaw in his life!!!!
They made a big story from something petty I guess...

It's not literally based on a true story, but it was influenced by Ed Gein.
