I think the director put subtle hints of homosexuality with the buff abs which is why the movie is so popular in the gay community. If the movie was more realistic, it would have been even more gay. At that time, 100 percent of Spartan males were either homosexual or bisexual. They believed the institutionized homosexuality in the phalanx barracks increased the fighting spirit of Spartan men.
