What movie was this one line said in ? .. and says this only once in the movie ?

"Arf! Arf, Arf!"

Clues: The actor says this line exactly as shown, one time. No more, no less.
The director of this movie was also a fairly famous actor for his time. ( How many movies do you know that are directed by an Actor ?)
This movie was made sometime between and/or including the years of 1970 to 1980.
This was the FIRST MOVIE that this actor had ever directed.
Although this movie was directed by an actor, he/she does not appear in this movie itself.

Once, long ago, a successful merchant married a lovely younger lady. He traveled frequently (he ran a caravan).
