In the gospel/spiritual/hymn Deep River there is the line "I want to cross over into campground." What does
it mean? To me campgrounds are places you go on family vacations in state parks and KOAs but I'm sure that isn't what Mahalia Jackson and Paul Robeson and their predecessors had in mind. Any clue what the word means in this context and its origin?
