In the gospel/spiritual/hymn Deep River there is the line "I want to cross over into campground." What does
it mean? To me campgrounds are places you go on family vacations in state parks and KOAs but I'm sure that isn't what Mahalia Jackson and Paul Robeson and their predecessors had in mind. Any clue what the word means in this context and its origin?

Okay. But why is it a metaphor for heaven? Where did the term come from? Is it in the Bible?

it most likely came or was inspired by the hymn SHALL WE GATHER. AT THE RIVER . THE BEAUTIFUL THE WONDERFUL THE RIVER . YES WILL GATHER AT THE RIVER .
this meant that the fellow Christan's would meet again at the river in heaven.
