In the strict sense of the word, a hotel only has accommodation. However, most modern hotels also provide other facilities like a sauna, gym, pool, spa, restaurant(s) and bar(s). Some of these facilities can be very classy, hence their rating of 5 Stars.
Resorts have a lot more facilities and provide a lot more activities for their guests. They are usually rated 4 or 5 stars. Accommodation can be a combination of hotel style and/or individual cabins scattered around. Resorts tend to be very expensive compared to hotels, but then you pay for the convenience of having everything at your fingertips.
Resorts are usually found near the coast, though there are some very luxurious restorts located in the country or in the mountains.

Though you can live in both for a few days or so, each serves different services. Hotels are usually a big building with lots of rooms--depends on how much budget you have cuz if you're filthy rich, you can have suites as big as your house... For more added plessure to the customers, most hotels have pools, restaurants, gyms, spas, mini theaters, and salons; etc. Resorts on the other hand, are more like a "family place" because they usually have very large acres of land with either beaches around, or pools, beautiful freakin landscapes where you and your family can have picnics, and so on and so forth. It's where a big group of people like family and friends could enjoy together. They also have rooms which you can rent for a couple of days, depending on the customer. That's all I can share! Hope this helps!
