People often use expression like "needs fixed," or "wants fed." I'm fond of these expressions because the omit unneccesary words. However, are they grammatically acceptable?

I'm looking for concrete rules, not personal opinion.

I hope you share my pride in what we have accomplished in a fairly short time. vs I hope you share my pride in what we have accomplished in a fairly short period of time.

Can both of these sentences work the way they are written? I know the second one is tighter, but I am being told I am wrong that the 1st sentence can not be used that way and be correct.

Some of you should be ashamed of yourselves!

Looking at some of the written ability on this site I despair! And don't give me the "they are kids" excuse -

Why is this do you think - only the smart need reply!

There is a phrase I've heard before that describes when, for example, an armed robber gets killed during a pursuit in which he was endangering more people, instead of getting jail time, etc. It probably has the same meaning as the word "karma," but it has the word "justice" in it. It's something like "you play with fire, you're gonna get burned." I just can't find it anywhere! Thanks. :)
