I have heard that format called "the British format" or "the European format" for over 10 years.
It seems to me that the style is increasing is usage.

There are many ways of writing a phone number. It doesn't matter, in general, which one you use but if you are entering a phone number in a web form, you usually omit all separators.

that's not to big a change i guess, but why change it now? It's been done for like...ever! some ppl (especially old ppl) won't be able to adjust to the change. And plus now we jus put the number into our cell phone's anywayz....LoL
