Ok, I'm trying to teach myself linear algebra and having trouble understanding some the concepts...

If V is a subspace of, say R^3, then thats a collection of all vectors in some plane or some line going through the origin, correct? Then if we take the span of V, which a set of all linear combinations of the vectors in V, wouldn't that just give us the same plane or line?

(The *s means "squared"). The equation of the circle with center O(0,0) is x*2 + y*2=40. The points A(-2, 6) and B (-6, -2) are endpoints of chord AB. DE right bisects chord AB at F.

a) Verify that the center of the circle lies on the right bisector of chord AB

b)Find the distance from the center of the circle to chord AB, to the nearest tenth.

I totally got stuck at this calculus assignment again. :(
Need some help from you guys again. :)
So I have to find and explicitly express a function that is continuous and increasing in its all real number domain, it has to be bounded, but not differentiable. I thought about y = |x|, but it's not bounded, and half of its part is decreasing. Any idea guys?
another question is if f(x) = (x^3)cos(1/x) where x does not equal to 0, and f(x) is also equal to 0 (a point itself).
is this function f(x) differentiable, continuous, monotonic, bounded, and integrable on the interval [-1,1]?
f(x) = | (x^3)cos(1/x) x does not equal to 0
| 0
hope i made this question look clear enough. :(
Thanks in advance

find the mistake kindov problem.

(x+1)(x-1)-(x+1)(x+2) -3
---------------------------- = -----
(x+1)(x-7) x-7

i know the answer wasnt a so i didnt post that one. if it also wouldnt be a problem could you explain why thats the right answer.

B After the polynomials are multiplied, they must be simplified, so the answer should be -1
---
x-7

C The polynomials should be multiplied, so the answer should be
(x^2-1)-(x^2+3x+2)
-------------------------
x^2-6x-7

D (x - 1) and (x + 2) cannot be combined after canceling the (x + 1) terms, so the answer should be
(x-1)-(x+2)
-------------
x-7

E The expression cannot be simplified.
F This solution is correct.

here it is... Which radioactive isotope will retain only (1/8) its original radioactive atoms after approximately 43 days?

the formulas used ffor this are as follows: fraction remaining= (1/2) t/ T..
t= total time elapsed. T= half life.
and number of half life periods: t/T .. these formulas are off a referance table.
the answer to this question is phosphorus - 32 which has a half life of 14.3 days. .. the explanation in the back is terrible; all it says is ...
(1/2) t/T = 1/8....... t/T= three half lives.... i just dont understand how to arrive at threee half lives. if i would have gotten that then i would have been able to do the rest.. i was looking at this question aimlessly ffor like ten minutes..helpp'thankss =D
