-5 < 3-4x < 19

I keep coming up the same wrong answer ! The right answer is (-4, 2). Don't know what I'm doing wrong !

Isolate x in the middle.

Subtract 3: -8 < -4x < 16

Divide by -4: 2 > x > -4

This is another way of phrasing (-4, 2)--x is bigger than -4 and less than 2.

Multiplying or dividing by a negative numbers changes the direction of an inequality.

subtract 3 from both sides
-8 < -4x <16

divide both sides by -4, when you divide by a negative you have to switch the signs

separate the equation
-5< 3-4x and 3-4x<19
-8<-4x and -4x<16
x< 2 and x> -4

=> 4x < 8 ....& ...-16<4x
=> x < 2 .....&..........-4
ANS = -4

2 > x ................... and ............ x > -4 (The inequalities switched directions because we divided by negatives)

So -4 < x < 2

Consider - 8 < - 4x
8 > 4x
x < 2

Consider - 4x < 16
4x > -16
x > - 4
Answer is - 4 < x < 2
