3x-3+6x=(-5x)+6

1. add like terms (in this case 3x and 6x are alike)

3x+6x=9x
9x-3=(-5x)+6

2. add 5x to each side

14x-3= (-5x+5x cancels out) +6

3. add +3 to each side

14x (-3+3 cancels out)=6+3
14x=9

4. divide each side by 14 to get value of x

14x/14=9/14
(14 cancels out from left side of equal sign) x=9/14

5. answer: x=9/14

Place all the x's on one side and whole numbers on the other side. Remember to change "-" to "+" (and vise versa) when crossing the equal sign:

3x + 6x + 5x = 6 + 3

Group like terms:

14x = 9
x = 9/14
