So, for instance, we all know that Australia is ahead of the US, time wise. But what is the reason for it? Why was the time zone started at one particular place and not another? Is there a scientific reason or just arbitrary?

If you look at a map of the U.S. right now, you'll see the very same "shape" that you have seen for so many years. With all the different weather, surely it is different. California has even lessened b/c of mudslides.
