Rikki-tikki-tavi is a great short story by Rudyard Kipling. There are seven main characters in this story. They are Rikki-tikki-tavi, Darzee, Darzee’s wife, Nag, Nagiena, Teddy, and Teddy’s father. Rikki-tikki is a smart mongoose great at killing snakes. He is brave, smart and aware. This story takes place in an Indian bungalow with a small garden were they grow fruit and vegetables. The problem is that the family who lives in the bungalow and their garden animals are in grave danger. Two cobras live in the garden and they don’t know what to do. Who will save them?
We know Rikki-tikki is brave because he kills snakes. First he kills Kurait a small garden snake. Next, he kills Nag, a large king cobra in an epic battle of the bathtub. He then finds his way to the nest of eggs and smashes every last one of them. Time for mama is what he was thinking before his killing spree ended with the poor cobra mommy. This is why he is brave.
Rikki is smart. We know this because he devised plans to kill the snakes. He then finished what he had started by doing the nasty deeds. Rikki-tikki-tavi actually wanted to do these things. Do we know why he is smart?
He is aware because he cares about the family. He shows this because he knew exactly when to pounce. He was able to jump out of the reach of snakes. He also can feel the presence of another in the room.
Rikki is brave, smart and aware. He is a great mongoose. If I was Rikki-tikki-tavi I would not be that brave, smart or aware. I really enjoyed this story
