It was a funk band. It had a big brass section (about 8 pieces) and a drumset. All instrumental. I'm dying to find them, because they were incredible. They appeared to be a pretty small local band.

How do people with no talent like Paris Hilton and Britney Spears make big money and get to be on TV?

Because they're attractive and stupid/popular, and their music reeks, but it stills gets more publicity than another artist out there who is much better, but doesn't look good in a music video. It's at the point now where all the popular artists are supermodels. If you don't look good, you sure as hell can't be on MTV. Just look at all the people on MTV these days. They're either profanity-obsessed gangstas, crazy punks, or hot chicks. Some examples are 50 Cent, Jay-Z, Eminem, Sum 41, Billy Talent, Panic at the Disco, Rihana, Hillary Duff, Kelly Clarkson, etc etc etc. All of these people (and I'd throw Brit and Paris into the mix) appeal to people these days and are shown on MTV all the time. God only knows why people like them. To me, it's as clear as day that their music isn't even close what was popular before the whole music video era.

I was once chatting with a young woman who had just graduated with a degree in music therapy. Although she wanted to share with me the name of her favorite operatic aria which she said came from a Wagnerian opera, she could not remember the title, and promised to let me know the next time we met.

I was a little surprised. She was all of 23 and I have not often come across people who groove on Wagner at that age, much less young women. So, I was very curious. (When I was 23, I thought Wagner was beyond the pale and anyone who liked his music was a curious old antique)

Sure enough, the next time I saw her, she bounced over to me and said, "Remember the last time we talked I told you I would find out the name of my favorite aria by Wagner?"

"Of course," I replied, Verrrrry curious!!!! by now.

"When I Am Laid in Earth", she replied happily.

Comments? Insight?

(for reference: the aria is 'Dido's Lament' from Henry Purcell's "Dido and Aeneas")
