Liking old music?

Nearly all the friends I know, and myself included also, seem to like the older classic bands, from Queen to Depeche Mode. Does anyone have a good reason why lots of people are turning to the 'classics'?
Also, do any people out there think the heavy use of synthesizers in the 70s and 80s has now destroyed modern music, where many singers/bands can't and don't play their own instruments, but rely on synthed backing tracks?

The reason why I asked this is because I have friend whos been to Australia a couple of times, will be going back again for Christmas 2007 with her family as well, she been there with her family so far.
