Nearly all the friends I know, and myself included also, seem to like the older classic bands, from Queen to Depeche Mode. Does anyone have a good reason why lots of people are turning to the 'classics'?
Also, do any people out there think the heavy use of synthesizers in the 70s and 80s has now destroyed modern music, where many singers/bands can't and don't play their own instruments, but rely on synthed backing tracks?

I would also like to add that, to me at least, most modern music sounds like crap Joy Division or New Order/Depeche Mode.

using and playing a synth still requires a lot of skill.
the art form is not diminishing, it is simply changing.
however, Big Music selects the absolute worst of whats out there and shoves it down people's throats. there are plenty of people in the world still making great music.
classic rock is so widely revered because it was great music that was given the platform to become popular, back in the days before Big Music had a complete grip on the music industry (but that too is slowly changing for the better).

The reason is quite simply talent!!! These days studio tracks are 99% manufactured by the sound men around whatever rubbish a singer or band may be producing. The object is to make a saleable item; Thats why so many are absolute crap whan you hear them live these days. I was one of the lucky ones to actually hear the Beach Boys perform Good Vibrations LIVE- out of this world, and saw the Stones several times in the 1970s, and Queen- you hear people who can actually play, and can sing, so thats why the oldies will always be popular. Anyone like the Animals, or The Who, or the Beatles will never die, because they studuied their craft, and had talent in buckets!!!

Older bands could actually play and write their own songs. So few these days do that. It is astounding how many people sample older songs now. Maybe that is some of the reason behind it because people check out the original and find it better. I see Queen have been mentioned on here and also the use of synthesisers. Queen didn't use synthesisers until their album "The Game" which when you listen to the albums prior to that makes you realise just how talented they were/are

Maybe because modern musicians quote older bands as an influence, and so fans look up the older bands to find out where the newer bands are coming from

music is progressive. always has been always will. Elvis was crap to Jim reeves fans , the Beatles were crap to Elvis fans and so on. Wagner was deemed a young noisy upstart by his contemporaries. and anyone who states joy division to sound 'crap' obviously has a very narrow view and taste in music. Jim reeves fan me thinks !
p.s apologies for misunderstanding on the jd point.

I'm 26 and I like some of the music from the 70's. I don't like alot of it though, just some of it. Like The Eagles and Queen.

Older music is hot now because we listen to it and here substance. The music now almost says the same thing in every song. The music almost sound the same and everything.

Good music doesnt really have a time limit for example mozart and beethoven are still listened to.I do think music today has to get a human touch or it will be ignored.

Because today all we hear is a bad repetition of old tunes and due to the fact that "modern" music is based in technology and has no soul in it.

that sh.it sucks. the 80s and 90s were the best, most interesting eras for music. so many new genres. truly groundbreaking sounds as opposed to by-the-book rock
