Preferably ones that aren't that popular, or bands that not many people have heard about!

Wow, sweetie, you got some pretty BAD answers here so far! First, I want to point out that dm_scorpio and emanmetal911 made some really awesome recommendations!! Personally, I don't think all of their recommendations would be approachable for you right now, until you get into heavier stuff than you already listen to. (I also don't like 100% of the bands they recommended, but anyway..)

I checked out your profile so I know a little bit about you (your age and a few of the bands you like), so considering your tastes I will try to recommend a few "awesome metal bands" for you, and I'll go for ones that generally aren't considered to be "popular." I listen to many different types of metal, from power metal to death metal, thrash metal to technical metal, but I am pretty picky about the bands I listen to. Here we go.. First I'm going to talk a little bit about a few that were already mentioned..

Of the bands already mentioned:

1. NEVERMORE (I would definitely recommend this band to you, but I would not have recommended Dreaming Neon Black, because I don't think that album would be as approachable for you as their album Dead Heart, In A Dead World.. and I have all of their albums)
"Believe In Nothing" from Dead Heart, In A Dead World:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxUm1hzYWCA

2. COMMUNIC (excellent recommendation, amazing band.. I like seeing that people are into them because they are not very well-known.. and coincidentally they draw a lot of influence from Nevermore, both in the music and the vocals)
"Conspiracy In Mind" from Conspiracy In Mind
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Plh3ElldNQ

3. ICED EARTH (this is a band I think you could get into very easily.. and Dark Saga is a good album recommendation)
"Slave to the Dark" from The Dark Saga
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yT7ZpJ00F-c
"Watching Over Me" from Something Wicked This Way Comes
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Nc6jM8BsI8

4. BLIND GUARDIAN (also should be easy for you to get into this band.. agree with Nightfall in Middle Earth recommendation)
"The Bard's Song" from The Forgotten Tales
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Guld6loBcnc&mode=related&search=
"Nightfall" from Nightfall in Middle Earth
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=haysjIYHAlg
(for some reason people like to put Blind Guardian and other metal songs, usually the melodic power or epic metal ones, to anime clips.. some of them are actually pretty cool)

5. OPETH (I am a HUGE fan of this band, but probably wouldn't have recommended them just yet.. if anything would have recommended the album Damnation because there are no "death metal" vocals (that means the gruff vocals), even though Blackwater Park is my favorite album by them.. they are really, really good, though)
"Harvest" from Blackwater Park (clean vocals, great song, first I ever heard by them and it got me into Opeth)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjkLMUZW09k
(Note: this is one band that sounds just as good, if not better, live as they do recorded, you will appreciate it if you ever get into them and then see them live)

6. OVERKILL (excellent band, love them.. they are considered "thrash," and are kind of a combination between Megadeth and AC/DC.. someone is going to kill me for saying that.. I don't think I would have recommended them for you but they rock!)
"Elimination" from The Years of Decay
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VoMCka5bBdU
"Hello from the Gutter" from Under The Influence
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ahIIekn_sno (I love them but I doubt you will like them.. just a guess, but maybe!)

OK!! Time for a few of my own recommendations:

1. PAIN OF SALVATION (vocalist has a beautiful voice, and the band is extremely talented.. give them a chance, it may take a little bit to get into them.. not all their stuff is slow and mellow, just to metion that)
"Pilgrim" from One Hour By The Concrete Lake
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVofsMf5jcs
"Ashes" from The Perfect Element I
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-5cn4o5oDY (disturbing video, I don't like it, just keep that in mind)
"Iter Impius.." from Be
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pQ0fQytKt0 (also disturbing, maybe don't watch this one, and the song cuts off in the end, very annoying)
(Sorry, could not find many good clips for you, but I recommend the album Entropia to start)

2. SONATA ARCTICA (easy to love, very talented band, young, energetic, AMAZING live, all-around great power metal band with many great songs)
"Wolf & Raven" from Silence
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTunQirWOk0
"Full Moon" from Ecliptica
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQ5_OYh2oqw
"Don't Say A Word" from Reckoning Night
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPQf4e46lNU
"Tallulah" from Silence
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQ5_OYh2oqw
"Unopened" from Ecliptica
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CI3750znTW0
"Broken" from Winterheart's Guild
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kbi8cBFVgYc

3. (Old) ANGRA (with vocalist Andre Matos), or SHAMAN, Andre's newer project (I like their more classic stuff with their former vocalist, great band from Brazil, give them a chance)
"Carry On" from Angra - Angels Cry
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YAiYUvvFnmo
"Fairy Tale" from Shaman - Ritual
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQu1cvXuvpA
"Make Believe" from Angra - Holy Land (my favorite album by them)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DyEesVu5qKY

4. EDGUY (very melodic, a lot of energy, I think you will like them)
"Vain Glory Opera" from Vain Glory Opera
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPQf4e46lNU
"All the Clowns" from Mandrake
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YPYAJzs0ags
"King of Fools" from their EP King of Fools
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=prMjUfuGY4U

5. NIGHTWISH (female vocals, very popular in Finland where they are from, great band with great songs)
"Wishmaster" from Wishmaster
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kbi8cBFVgYc
"She is My Sin" from Wishmaster (live)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOPb9dRY8Vw (yes she sounds that good live, but unfortunately she is no longer with the band and they are looking for a new vocalist)
"Nemo" from Once
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAsqNog7pmI
"I Wish I Had an Angel" from Once
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AR5_OuKUPGQ

6. SENTENCED (One of my favorites, easy to get into.. see what you think)
"Killing Me Killing You" from Crimson
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ekd-cugAaWs
"No One There" from The Cold White Light
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pkn2QOIbVlE
"Ever Frost" from The Funeral Album
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDsUZ8I-6Co
"Kaamos" from Frozen (just instrumental, but I love it)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpIx72OF6xs
"End of the Road" from The Funeral Album
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9MM-HHucHdE (this is also a great movie, totally off the subject, but anyway it's called Le Pacte des Loups or Brotherhood of the Wolf)

I hope you will give these suggestions a try, because I really worked hard on this for you!! Have fun :))

If you are in the States, then some good metal bands to pick up are:

Nevermore (album: Dreaming Neon Black), Iced Earth (album: Dark Saga), Blind Guardian (album: Nightfall in Middle-Earth), and (if you don't mind some death metal vocals) Opeth (album: Blackwater Park).

Everybody else is clueless.

There's so many but your question is so vague it's hard to give good recommendations.

Communic
High On Fire
Overkill
Brutality
Bolt Thrower
Jag Panzer
Immolation

Just so many! Check out www.metal-archives.com
