I'm writing a new song and the word needs to be one or two syllables but preferable one syllable.
I'm not looking for specifics such as beer or wine, but a general word like alcohol - but thats 3 syllables

The Yahoo Answers categorization apparatus got this question COMPLETELY WRONG as I had expected! Whereas "race" could refer to a people, here it refers to a running competition! I would imagine that there are numerous similar examples one could cite, or is that "sight". We might even find a site containing such examples! Without this explanation, the above Question would be deleted!

What's that word called when you know the perfect word to describe something but you can't remember what it is?

For example, I was thinking of what perspicacity meant and I wanted to say it but I forgot the actual word.

... words that are 'compound adjectives'?
I mean the adjectives that are hyphenated because the two words themselves aren't adjectives and couldn't modify the noun by itself...

Like... blood-curdling, hair-raising, spine-tingling, life-threatening, mind-boggling...

I refer to them as 'compound adjectives' for lack of a better term, but I'm sure there is one.
=-)

I sometimes want to use the word "were" when I feel like many of the people I know don't say it the way I would. Would it be, "If I was going to do that", or would it be "If I were going to do that"? I say "were". Also, how's my puncuation and grammar? Constructive criticism, only, please. There's no need to be rude.

Someone typed me a letter saying that "...the meeting is just going to be speeded up." Is that ok? Why wouldn't this person use "sped"? It's really bothering me. I don't know if I should correct this person, because the word speeded is in the dictionary.
