The news has been telling us about this "Mastermind" who plotted the 9-11 attacks. Shouldn't someone who gets the mastermind label be a creative person who does something for the betterment of mankind? I understand the dictionary's definition of 'mastermind,' yet a terrorist who plots evil should get a more derogatorry label. Why are they called 'masterminds? What would be a better term for evil people who construct a destructive plot?

Yesterday I got told off by my teacher because I hadn't done my homework, and was scared to say to him that I hadn't been well. Then another teacher later told him. Then he came back to me and said it would have been easier if I would have told him directly instead of giving him a "mickey mouse story".
I'm not a native speaker: what does that actually mean? I never heard it before.

I have a grammar question. Normally, we say

"It was you who WERE the burglar." or
"It was you who WAS always by my side."

But we also say

"I thought it was you who WERE late ."
"I thought it was you who WAS trying to tell me something is wrong."

I got confused there. How do we know when to use "it was you who WAS or WERE?" Please help me out and explain the rules! Many thanks in advance.

Many people use that word in reference to the term, filthy, nasty, dirty, etc. But my former English teacher from 12th grade used to argue that TRIFLING is not a word. What do you think? Is it a word or not?
