I thought it was short for Madeliene, but now I am unsure. I was looking around and people who are named Madison and other named people call themselfs that...? Please help...

I would have said "Madeline" too. I do a lot of genealogical research, and "Maddy" or "Mattie" is sort of an old-fashioned nickname (at least by our standards) for "Martha." For instance, one of my great-great grandmothers was Martha Christine Akin, but she was generally known as Mattie.

In this day and age we can make up names that are not short for anything or are nicknames for whatever name you would choose.

Katherine is often shortened to Kathy, or Kat, or Katie, although there are people who's name is Katie and it isn't short for anything.

My name is Catie, but my nickname is Kiki. :-)

Its also short for Matilda and Madison.

People are in control of their own names--what do you want it to be for?

It could be short for either. Why does it even really matter? People can call themselves whatever they want.
