I never understood why adults who are generally conservative spenders are into investing in the stock market. It seems like a game to me. Even if you do your research, you have to be lucky to earn money. And, even if you make money, it can easily be lost. Is there something that I'm not getting?

I mean of course we all must work, but how can you make the things you love to do into a profit. I am a journalist and love to party and lately i have thought of opening a night club to do the things I love and turn a profit, but how do you find investors. Or how do I know that this is the only thing I'm good at? Maybe we are good at several things, I also love to write, how do you know which one to throw it all in for and sink or swim? How do you know that whats made you happy for the past 10-12 years will still make you happy 20 years from now? I guess in a nutshell what I am asking is how will we be able to tell what we were put on earth to do ???

Now, I am not talking about laddering. I have the 10,000.00 now and will not need to tap into it for a long time. I would like to know if the compounded amount is greater for one 10,000.00 CD vs. 10 1,000.00 CD's.

I have been in my Company's 401k plan contributing 15% of my pay. The plan is with Fidelty investments.

I received my pay check on June 30th but am not seeing any contribution to my 401k till today. Fidelty says it's Comapny's fault and Company says it's Fidelty's fault. I am at loss being the victim. what should be my next action?

Say you have 4 or less years til retirement and have several different accounts with different brokers. One is a 401K with Co. match of 3% which includes 60% stock and 40% bonds and retirement acct. Two is a 10 year annuity with the S&P index fund and Three is 50% stock and 50% safe with lower interest. Are you diversified enough or should you consolidate it all to one acct. with a mixture of stock, bonds and cash.
