I have this question:

Show that the function f(x) = x^3 - x^2 -x -1 has a zero for x between 1 and 2.

I looked up newton's method on the internet and found this explanation

"Consider the problem of finding the positive number x with cos(x) = x3. We can rephrase that as finding the zero of f(x) = cos(x) − x3. We have f '(x) = −sin(x) − 3x2. Since cos(x) ≤ 1 for all x and x3 > 1 for x>1, we know that our zero lies between 0 and 1. We try a starting value of x0 = 0.5."

I'm not sure how in the example it just makes the statement since cos(x) <= 1 for all x. I am not sure how this leads to knowing the zero is between 0 and 1... how does this apply to my question... could someone please explain the method

OK so basically i have known him 4 years, and he has always been really rude to me. but then we started going to school with one another, and he was still mean..

After the first year..My parents were getting a divorce, and we had to get out. I broke down infront of him,and he told me he would help me.

he is still kinda mean sometimes, but somepeople say he looks at me for periods of time,and today we were skating, and he was laughing, and he tried to tickle me....

what does this MEAN??

My doctor told me I have anxiety..And I do suffer from many of its symptoms..But what is really concerning me is the forgetfulness and and sometimes when I talk it's like my mind goes blank and I can't find the right words..I'm just 17..and I dont' get that much sleep too..I usually sleep for 3 to 4 hours..I believe it could just be a brain tumor and not anxiety at all :(

Yahoo should create a pass code or something for parents to program if they approve their child being here, kinda like when MTV first was on cable TV. Maybe then there would not be so many sinsles thumbs down and violations for adult inuendos? I think they should because we have asked for a catogory for teens only and they have not created it . Or maybe parents should take computer use out of the hands of kids when they will not be there to supervise?
