The AFL is the name of the national Australian Rules Football league, but alot of people refer to the sport by that name (AFL.) Why? It is like referring to any level of Football ("Soccer") as FA Cup or Premier League, which of course would never happen.

I am in no way being sarcastic, I really want to know.
I am a fan of American football first, but have always been facinated with the differences and the similarities between these sports.
Any real, non-sarcastic answers would be greatly appreciated.

I hope they will. I'm from Melbourne but I ******* hate Aussie Rules with a passion and watching some rugby league will be a nice break from the unpleasant tastes of Aussie Rules.

Melbourne has hosted the Commonwealth Games, Olympic Games and currently hosts sporting events such as the F1 grand prix, Australian Open Tennis, Melbourne Cup Carnival, AFL grandfinal, Boxing Day test and soon the World Swimming Championships.
