Melbourne has hosted the Commonwealth Games, Olympic Games and currently hosts sporting events such as the F1 grand prix, Australian Open Tennis, Melbourne Cup Carnival, AFL grandfinal, Boxing Day test and soon the World Swimming Championships. Is there any city in Australia or the world who does any better??

Ya huh, LoL. Melbourne is No #1 and Sydney #2. That's pretty awesome. And yeah, the World Swimming Championships are going to be great - from what I've seen, the pool looks amazing. Who ever figured: a pool ontop of a tennis court? Also looking forward to AFL which starts pretty soon, that'll be cool, but it's a pity that Melbourne isn't more into Rugby League, because they've got a super team in mighty good form that deserves much more credit from it's home state.

Of course, where else in the world consistently pulls the types of crowds for so many different sports (AFL matches, Melbourne Cup, Boxing Day test opening day) .... Any other city in the world cannot boast that: maybe in South America and Europe they may get larger crowds for their soccer matches, etc. And as for cities in the US of A: Melbourne craps all over them in terms of sporting crowds, and in addition to that, at least Melbournians can say to anyone from New York that they still have a World Trade Centre!!

Don't forget about the MotoGP and a round of the World Superbikes! Yes, they are at Phillip Island but it's only about 90 minutes from the CBD.
Someone told me there are 12 sports stadiums in the world that have roofs that open and close. Melbourne has 3 of them. Docklands, Rod Laver & Vodaphone.
