Alternative Fuel Vehicles

I think it's stupid to think that corn will save us. Not only do we have to worry about drought and disease to kill the crops, but the vehicles will get 20% less fuel economy with this fuel. It's a bad idea. Write your congressman at congress.org and tell them to think for once. Fuel cells are the best choice.

Who Killed The Electric Car?
Copyright © 2006 Sony Pictures Classics

It was among the fastest, most efficient production cars ever built. It ran on electricity, produced no emissions and catapulted American technology to the forefront of the automotive industry. The lucky few who drove it never wanted to give it up. So why did General Motors crush its fleet of EV1 electric vehicles in the Arizona desert?

Is there possibly any alternative to the electric cars to solve our problem of pollution?

Gas prices are going up, but so are electric rates in the Chicago area. Is there actually a cost savings in driving a hybrid? Clearly there is an environmental saving, but the vehicle cost is higher. If the fuel source costs less, we might consider buying one.

If the only emission of hydrogen fuel cars is water... wouldn't that be kind of dangerous in the winter weather states? Even with ice melt/calcium chloride it only works until the temprature doesn't drop below a certain temprature... and how about in standing still traffic? The ice will build up on the road way?

there have been so many cost effective alternate fuel and energy sources created, but each and every one of them seem to either get totally shot down, or are no longer heard from.

I've seen in magazines where people built their own refinery for making biodiesel. Anyone on here every actually done it? How hard is it to build and maintain? I have a diesel truck and access to all the used cooking oil I want from a local bakery... they only fry donuts in it so it's VERY clean.

The technology is here so why not make it happen. And if you want power look at the Lexus 450H (Hybrid) with 438 Horse power. Add the plug in feature and you have 100mpg around town with ultra high performance.

I have being hearing of a water powered car that uses electrolosis to to form hydrogen which is then used to power the car.

However to get the electricity in the first place surely fossil fuels must be used to produce it. (or perhaps not i don't know) If so what is the purpose of a water powered car?

I have a 1977 associated degree in auto mechanics & have worked in fact keeping projects. After hearing of electric Toyoto Rav EVs, i could not believe they are not on the road. I want to keep data on the perfomance of an electric vehicle to used to promote or inform manufactor of possible problems. I would expect to be given various coniditions or mileage for the testing of the electric vehcile. I am very good at keeping notes & elaborating on prroblems, checking the system as it is driven, checking for possible problems a 'normal' driver might encounter, keeping track of costs. I want to be the driver for such manufartors or companies.

With all the focus on alternative fuels, natural gas is a very good solution. Most of the natural gas in the US is domestically produced here, and can take a big bite out of our dependence on foriegn oil. I drive over 600 miles a week in my Honda GX (NGV), and I pay around 2$ a gallon for fuel.

Currently, Brazil has Alcohol/Methanol fuels at every gas station. (Required by the government) The price per gallon is half of what a gallon of gasoline costs. I saw a rent a car that is capable of taking Alcohol/Methanol or gasoline. I these alternative cars are not that much more to produce. Why doesnt the US have this alternative fuel, Alcohol/Methanol at gas stations? Why isnt the United States going for Alcohol/Methanol fuels?

I've heard rumors that the process used to create the batteries found in hybrid vehicles actually emit more pollution than the actual vehicles themselves will ever emit over their entire lifetime on the road. This makes me wonder just how "environmentally friendly" these hybrids really are by the time they get on the road. Perhaps we are only saving our wallets vs. the environment...if the rumor is true. Your thoughts??
