A mechanic told me that synthetic oil changes do improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions.

Yes, but only a little.

In an internal combustion engine, oil vapor is produced by the natural wear on said oil by the engine's need for lubrication. This vapor is, in turn, reintroduced into the combustion chamber, thus recycling it into a little more thrust. Changing the oil in your vehicle will definitely save gas mileage, and it will provide a small amount of emmisions control.

Yes, but not directly...Let me explain.

By changing the oil in your car your keeping your car maintained and getting the best mileage possible. You can also reduce gas emissions by keeping your tires properly inflated.

Your car won't give off less C02 but it will in fact reduce the amount of C02 emissions your car gives off.

Yes, I am involved in a company performing SAE testing on this very subject. The short answer is yes, when your engine stops in heats above normal, this causes oil, especially old oil to stick (gunk) to your engine, now your engine quickly burns this off in the first 10 miles or so, but it is between 50 to 95 percent more pollution per mile, it is a wide range because it depends on engine size, load, and other factors one takes into account during the testing.

Yes, in my 2001 ranger I run synthetic oil in the engine, trans, rears and power steering and get 3 more MPG on the highway. The best one (CONKLIN) second or third best is AMSOIL

i would say no, it probably causes alot more if you do change your oil.

if you think about it, if you dont change your oil your car would break down and be useless thus reducing emissions to zero.

you have to change your oil anyway so why does it matter.

Yes, it does. Otherwise, it burns your engine and uses more gas, hence more carbon monoxide (air polution) that is spewed into the air. Not to mention it keeps your car from blowing up :P
