I have been wondering about electric cars:
If you convert the petrol straight into movement (i.e. engine) you get a lot of kinetic energy. But say you use the mains. they burn the coal, gas, etc. to create heate to create movement to create electricity to charge your car wich is converted to movement. isn't just using a good diesel car better for the environment in general.

I've been looking online trying to weigh up the specification differences on hybrid vehicles currently available.

Not knowing much about cars to begin with, it's not making much sense.

Any advice or insight would be helpful. Thanks.

Gas prices are very high. Now since they use corn for and secondary fuel, did you notice Milk as gone up twice as much since a year ago. No matter what they do everything is going sky high.

Would you participate in a well planned National Stuff Your Fuel Day? If every one in the USA excluding of course Police, Fire, and Emergency Vehicles was to stay at home, ride a bike, walk or use another form of transportation that didn't require Fossel fuel for one day would you participate?

My mother, who is legally blind, wants a vehicle that she can drive, but that doesn't qualify as an automobile. She also won't consider garden tractors, golf carts or something similar. We've seen several electric cars out, but they all qualify as automobiles. Any ideas?

During Reagan's first (or second) oil crisis, gasohol was introduced. It was 30% cheaper than the old "regular" gas we used to be allowed to burn in the u.s.
The gasohol ( I used it) didn't freeze up in the winter like regular gas, it didn't require additonal paraphanalia (catalytic converters etc.) and my car ran just fine.

Now we have expensive unleaded, here in California. Our state government has mandated that a cancer causing agent be added to it (they just recently removed it; after ten years of drinking it in our groundwater).

And the "new" gasohol gets a new name and we are being told it's going to cost more...

I guess my question is.... why didn't we do anything over the last 25 years to introduce gasohol to California's system.. shoot, it would have saved us a bundle!

There are many alternative energy sources out there, but none that are readily available, cheaper then gas, and easy to retrofit on an automobile. Electric cars are great but have you seen any recharging facilities near your home? No.

Why anydrous ethanol (max.1% water) is not directly used as fuel?
- Is it necessary to modify the engine to make it possible to run on anhydrous ethanol? If so, what characteristics of the engine need to be modified?

- If it's not possible to use anhydrous ethanol (max.1% water) directly as fuel, why is that?

Note: Current ethanol fuel are hydrated. Even E100 (sold in Brazil) is hydrated, 96% ethanol and 4% water.

At $4.00/gal for fuel one could drive 100,000 miles and still not break even with regards to the extra cost of the hybrid feature. How many batteries will have been replaced during this period and at what cost? What other energy resources will be required (electricity/natural gas, diesel) to dispose of the spent batteries and at what cost? What about the energry and materials to make the batteries in the first place? Can these batteries just be thrown in the land fills along with the other garbage?

By 2009 there will be a hydrogen filling staion within 90 miles everywhere in the Netherlands. http://www.ecn.nl/en/ . Hydrogen comes from electrolosis in separating the water to create a gas that can ultimately power a motor. Bio-deisel will only slow the oil consumptiion. Hydrogen wil subsitute it. By 2010 The Netherlands will have created a portable filling station powered by sunlight. Plus hydrogen has almost no emissions which is brilliant for the ecosystem. How would you like to pay only $4.00 to fill up your new hydrogen powered automobile? HYDROGEN IS ALMOST FREE. Now thats a energy worth pursuing.
